Alan D. Overton
ALAN D. OVERTON ESSEX JUNCTION - Alan D. Overton, of Essex Junction, passed away on Feb. 22, 2012. He was born in Northampton, Mass., on Feb. 12, 1937. He lived and attended school in many places including Clinton, N.Y., Cambridge, Mass., Natick, Mass., Westfield, N.J.; Paris, France, Stillwater, Okla., and Lawrence, Kan. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1959. In his first week at UVM Alan met his wife and life partner, Ann Maher Overton. They were married in Burlington in June of 1959, just in time for them to leave for Ann Arbor, Mich., where Al graduated from Michigan Law School in 1961. While Alan studied, Ann supported them both as a registered nurse at the University of Michigan Hospital, as well as the VA Hospital. Alan remained an avid Wolverine, Detroit Tiger and Detroit Lions fan; although, he often said that the Lions certainly tested his loyalty over the years. After law school graduation, Alan and Ann left for Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas for a three year commitment with the Air Force Judge Advocate Corps, where he tried mainly General and Special Court Martial's. In 1965, Alan returned to Vermont to practice law and raise a family with Ann.
Alan and Ann settled in Essex Junction where they lived happily for 47 years. They had three children, Alan (Jay) Overton Jr., Daniel L. Overton and Jennifer A. Overton. Alan will be greatly missed by his entire family, including his five grandchildren, Matthew, Katrina, Kathryn, Michael, and Emme; and stepgrandson, Chasen Congreves, with all of whom he had special and meaningful relationships. Alan practiced law in Essex Junction for nearly 50 years with his long-term partners and friends, Philip Kolvoord and Gregg Wilson, as well as Mike Danley. Alan also partnered with his son, Dan, with whom he practiced law for 17 of those years. Credit for Alan's successful law practice cannot be given without mentioning the loyal, efficient and meticulous assistance of his paralegal, Louise Jensen. Alan thought of all of his clients as his friends and very much appreciated their loyalty. There is little doubt that Alan presently spends his time in Heaven, assisting and nurturing clients who left this earth with unfinished business. Alan was an active local citizen. He was a founding member and President of Essex Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Award recipient. He was a member of Burlington Country Club and Past-President of its Board. He was a Little League and Babe Ruth League coach for a total of 12 years and was one of the founders of the Essex Flag Football program. He served on the Brownell Library Board of Trustees, as well as the Holy Family Parish Council. Alan had a strong faith in God and except for the family, friends, pets and clients he will miss on Earth, he was very much looking forward to the everlasting life he would spend with God and those who predeceased him. Alan had a special affection for the University of Vermont. While attending UVM, he was Vice- President of his graduating class, President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, a Chairman of Kake Walk, President of the Newman Society, VicePresident of the Boulder Society and a member of the football team. After returning to Vermont, Alan continued his service with UVM in a number of ways, including being the National Chairman of the UVM Development Fund, President of the Alumni Association, Founder and Co-Chair of the Catamount Club, Co-Trustee of Phi Delta Theta Alumni Association for 30-plus years, and a member of the University Board of Trustees for six years. He is a recipient of UVM's Distinguished Alumni Award. Alan also served on the Board of the Fanny Allen Hospital for eight years, the Board of the University Health Center until its merger with the hospitals and on the Board of the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont for over eight years.
Alan was a role model in all areas of his life whether as a husband, father, brother, uncle, counselor, coach or friend. He had an insatiable interest in learning all he could about the people he met. That was true even in his final days at the Medical Center where he would proudly introduce each attending nurse or doctor to visitors with a simple "this is Nurse So-and-so, she's from California, graduated from UVM, has two sons, a dog and loves to ski when she's not working of course". Alan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann; their three children; daughter-in-law, Pamela Collette Overton; five grandchildren; brother, Mark Aronszajn; Mark's wife, Kathy; brother, Edward Overton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, with all of whom he had wonderful relationships. Alan was predeceased by his mother, Sylvia Lee Aronszajn; father, Richard C. Overton; and sister, Elisabeth Overton Gordon. His family wishes to express their enormous appreciation to all of Alan's fine doctors, nurses and other care providers, including the staff at Fletcher Allen Health Care, for their diligent and loving care. He was proud to have been part of the development of such a top notch facility. A Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Essex Junction, immediately followed by a reception at the Inn at Essex. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alan's name to Essex Rescue, Ambulance Service, 1 Educational Dr., Essex Junction, VT 05452.
